Twenty years ago, I discovered Bangkok.
What was meant to be a simple trip turned into a love story with Thailand — despite the language barrier.
On a train to Ubon Ratchathani, I met Tik, who helped me decipher my ticket.
Our awkward exchanges in English marked the beginning of an unexpected connection.
During that journey, I wrote down the Thai words she taught me.
With every new word, the country opened up to me a little more.
But the frustration remained: I wanted to understand family conversations, order food without pointing at pictures.
